SARUNG BANGGI
by Benjamin A. Claveria |
The
Buhinon and English versions below are the
original interpretations of the author. Sarung Banggi has
often been mistaken for a folk song. But its
authorship is known. It was written by Potenciano
B. Gregorio, Sr. of Libon, Albay in 1912. It is
another favorite of Bikolanos both as a song and
as a dance piece. Several versions of its lyrics
exist.

'SAD A
GĀBI (Buhinon) 'Sad a gābi sa idyaan
Nakarengeg akong inuning bayon nga sadang,
Pagena ko katorogan,
Beke kindi nyo boses mo amo palan.
Dagos ako bangon
nyo mga mata ko binuklat,
Nyadtong kadeleman ako nangalagkalag,
Kaso nyo segheng ko na punta sa itaas,
Nakita ko lalawgen mong maliwanag.

ONE EVENING (English)One
evening as in bed I lay
I heard a plaintive song of bird that spurns the
light of day,
At first I thought it was a dream,
But soon I knew it was no dream for it was you.
And
then still half asleep from my warm cozy bed I
did rise,
And tried the darkness deep to pierce with my
straining eyes,
Then I looked around I chanced my eyes to raise,
And saw in glorious radiance your lovely face.
