BALSAMINA
by Benjamin A. Claveria
The Buhinon and English versions below are the original interpretations of the author.

Balsamina is another humorous Bikol song. The account of the swain who drowned in the swill he was going to feed to the pigs reminds the elderly Buhinion of the time when affianced suitors were asked to undergo a probationary test of his qualities as a future husband by serving as a helper at the household of his intended bride. Feeding the pigs was often one of the chores assigned to him

BALSAMINA (Buhinon)

Ading si Balsamina daragang magayon,
Burak nin Aprika, maogmang pagkiten,
Indi natatakut pagtuga ning Mayeng,
Among natakutan, ngaran separasyon.

Natipon sa kanya a kadimalasan,
Sampulong ilusyon anas binayaan;
Manarig nyo esad nagidamaydamay,
Pinabaog orig, naemes sa sagmaw.

Inihong si Balsamina daragang magayon,
Burak nin Aprika, maogmang pag hilngon;
Dai natatakut pagtuga ning Mayon,
Iyong natakutan, ngaran separasyon.

Natipon sa iya an kadimalasan,
Sampulong ilusyon anas binayaan;
Manarig may saro na nagdamaydamay,
Pinabawog orig, nalamos sa sagmaw.

BALSAMINA
(
English)

This girl, Balsamina, for her beauty renowned,
Fair bloom from Africa, what a joy to be found!
So brave, she's notafraid of Mayon's eruption,
But she is afraid of her love's separation.

And she seemed to have owned all the bad luck around -
Ten swains had courted her, now not one can be found;
For while one did persist to take her as his bride,
When asked to feed the pigs, drowned in the swill instead.
